Ikea Kallax: Then, Now, Always

Once upon a time there was a shelving unit from Ikea called Expedit. We all had it. It was cheap, easy to put together (Yes! An easy ikea build) and could hold anything. It was in everyone’s East Village apartment as vinyl record storage , makeshift clothes closet, room divider and extra seating. DJ’s around the globe and regular people like myself were in a panic when Expedit was discontinued in 2014. Thankfully their creator, Börje Lindgren, heard our cries and the product was re-imagined and renamed Kallax. They updated the design and production methods to make it more durable, sustainable and affordable. When I had children and and the records migrated elsewhere, my Kallax held baby toys and tiny onesies like it does in thousands, if not millions, of households around the world. I continue to recommend this unit on a weekly basis for my clients no matter what their budget for toy, art and clothes organization. It’s white, it’s shiny, it’s strong, it’s simple and understated. There’s nothing not to like. There are so many knock-offs- but I promise you that the Ikea version will last a lifetime if you treat it right. Your kids will grow up, your music taste will change- but your Kallax is forever (even if they change the name again).
